Generic

  • I did stick with train and bike for environmental reasons. Trip to Hokkaido from Tokyo is long, but one can make a stop in Hachinohe or Hakodate.
  • google maps: I hate many aspects of google software, but this allows you to conveniently lookup points of interest, set markers in the webbrowser while accessing https://maps.google.com, and then accessing these from the mobile. Google does not know all bus/train connections for Japan though.
  • Yahoo maps has more (all?) trains and busses. Also as android mobile app in playstore. Excellent for saying “I am in Sapporo, how can I get to Furano”.
  • Osmand: best offline functionality, has best mountain maps. No good train connections, also no convenient sharing of map markers between mobile and browser.
  • My route/stays over night in 2021/09: Hachinohe, Sapporo, Furano, Asahikawa, Otaru, Hakodate. This page covers more, also other potential destinations.

West Hokkaido

  • 八戸市/Hachinohe
    • A nice city in the north of the Japanese main island. I did go to Hokkaido via train and stayed here over night.
    • It has a nice coast line, with sand beaches, also with rocks. Good to walk along.
    • Grand Hotel Hachinohe had an amazing breakfast as of 2021/09.
  • 札幌/Sapporo
    • Bicycle Rental Sapporo: near Sapporo train station, bike rental for 500yen/day. Ask to get one with saddle height adjustable, or you will be uncomfortable..
    • Sapporo Beer museum, Transport museum: both temporarily closed as of 2021/09
    • Ropeway to Mount Moiwa: not bad, but not really much to see at the top. Going to the top of the TV tower in the city is more interesting, and cheaper.
    • Jozankei Onsen: 90min by bus from the Sapporo train station, haven't been there
    • Historical Village Of Hokkaido (Hokkaido Kaitaku No Mura)
    • TV tower, sapporo odori park: must see, going up the tower is good
    • District around Hosuisusukino Station: stores, good for walking
    • Eat: Miso Ramen
  • 小樽/Otaru
    • historical city near 札幌
    • walk along the Otaru canal
    • got ot the Otaru Music Box Museum, steam clock in front, then walk down Sakaimachihondori Street
    • Bank of Japan Otaru museum
    • Otaru city general museum (about Otaru history), Otaru Museum (they have trains/transport)
    • Otaru Beer Otaru Warehouse No.1 - a beer hall Bavarian style. They have the best Weizen/weissbier I got in Japan so far, 0.5l for 700円, brewed by local brewery https://otarubeer.com
  • 登別市/のぼりべつし/Noribetsu
    • noboribetsu onsen, bear park
    • Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura (ninja village)
    • Toyakoonsen/洞爺湖温泉

Middle of Hokkaido

  • 富良野市/ふらの/Furano
    • done
      • Cycling: renting a bike is good to get around
      • Farm Tomita (farming and showing lavender, selling lavender products)
      • Onsen (most are in hotels, also the one I used)
      • eat: ramen, curry: Yuiga Doxon is nice, they even have Weizen beer
    • not done:
      • cheese factory
      • Furano Brewery/富良野地麦酒館
      • walk along Sorachi river, sightseeing buses (running only in the busy seasons?)
      • 上富良野町 郷土館: small history museum
    • hiking:
      • 富良野西岳/Furanonishidake: reachable by foot, 4h oneway. This is flagged as “for experienced hikers”, as you have to go through plants of 2m height for 5min. Also, you have to cross a brook several times. The top has nice views though (have not yet published my pictures). For the way downwards, I walked down the ski way, as the ropeway/skilifts are not operated in summer.
  • 旭川市/Asahikawa
    • done:
      • 大雪山国立公園 Daisetsuzan National Park
      • 旭岳/Asahidake, 紅葉/autumn leafs. You can go by bus to the ropeway, and go up. The 1 hour of walking around, or hiking to Asahidake summit (I did not go to the summit)
      • Eat: soysauce based ramen (I did this at the ramen village)
      • Asahiyama Zoo - it's not huge, but nicely done. The zoo is popular in Japan, often in media.
      • Sake brewing museum - I think one has to register as a group to get a tour through the brewery
      • Ashikawa ramen village: multiple ramen stores in one big building. The initial idea was to offer small bowls so one can try various ramen, but as of 2021/10 I saw just a single store offering the small bowls.
    • not done:
      • snow museum
      • Asahikawa Heiwadori Retail Park
      • one could go by bus/train to 美瑛町/びえい/Biei and see the blue pond which appeared a default Apple MAC bachground
  • Sounkyo onsen
    • A village, nicely reachable from Asahikawa, good as base for hiking, has onsen

Middle

  • 帯広市/Obihiro
    • rental bike, mountains

East Hokkaido

  • Lake Akan, Lake Mashu and Akan Onsen: ryokan and onsen near Lake Mashu、kawayuonsen
  • Kushiro marsh: walking, nature
  • Lake Kussharo: Kotan onsen, Ikeno-yu: both feel like “in the sea” (featured here)

South

  • 函館/Hakodate
    • guide with walking suggestions at the train station
    • West of central train station:
      • the port, nice historical buildings, all reachable by foot
      • Cape Tachimachi/立待岬 is a spot with great views
    • Near Hakodate train station, there is a museum ship which can be visited
    • Northeast of the central station, there is the Goryōkaku, a 5-edged-star-island. Can be watched from nearby tower, can be walked. Also museums nearby.
    • Eat:
      • at Hakodate central station and other places, there are fantastic products made with milk and cheese, for example cheese cake. Not very convenient to take home as they need to stay refrigerated, but can be eaten directly..
      • restaurant ラッキーピエロ has a good reputation, had no chance to try it
    • hiking
      • West of the Hokodate train station, there is Mnt.Hahokate/函館山. Great views over the city from top. Ropeway exists, but was closed as of 2021/10. Hiking possible in 60-70min. The view is also great in the evening. In the south of that area, one can go to Cape Tachimachi.
      • North of Hakodate, there is 駒ヶ岳/こまがたけ/Komagatake, a vulcano. Can be hiked partly as of 2021/10. Summit area is closed.
    • not done
      • Yunokawa Onsen - seems to be closed? Could not find it, just a nearby bathhouse.
      • Hakodate Tropical Botanical Garden - bathing monkeys
      • 大沼国定公園/Onuma Quasi-National Park
